In episode 9 of the Kick's Cheer Podcast, we're stepping off the cheer mat to talk about... school! And not just anyone: Tristan Manzo, teacher and founder of Mentor Education, our new sponsor, came to talk to us about academic success, tutoring, and concrete tips for succeeding in school, especially when you're a student-athlete.
Do you cheer, travel often for competitions, or miss a few classes here and there? You're not alone. Most athletes experience this kind of challenge. But the good news is: there are solutions!
✏️ Are you an athlete?
Here are 5 tips to help you succeed in your school year:
1. Start early (not just when things are bad!)
You can ask for help even before you fail. A tutor isn't just for struggling students. It's also a great way to start the year off on the right foot, stay organized, and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
“You don't have to be failing to get a tutor. Just a little help can make a big difference!”
2. Organize your schedule like a pro 📆
Do you train 3-4 nights a week? Is your schedule already packed? Then plan your study time too. Put it in your calendar as if it were practice. For example: Monday 6–7 p.m., math homework. Take 5 minutes every Sunday to plan your school week.
Tip: Work for 50 minutes, then take a 10-minute break. Otherwise, your brain becomes a full sponge!
3. Stay in touch with your tutor (even between sessions!) 📲
With Mentor Education, you can get continuous support. Do you have an exam on Monday and a question is stressing you out on Sunday night? You can write to your tutor, and they'll often respond quickly. This little extra support makes a big difference.
4. Create a real relationship with your tutor
It's not just someone who explains fractions to you. It's someone who gets to know you, motivates you, and with whom you develop a wonderful relationship. Many young people return week after week, happy to see their favorite tutor again.
“The human connection is what makes a student want to continue learning.”
5. Communicate between school, sports… and tutor! 💬
Are you in sports studies? Does your coach want to keep you motivated? If your teacher, your coach, and your tutor are on the same page, it's a win-win situation. When your coach says, "Well done, I heard you improved your math grade!" That's motivating.
💬 And for parents?
It's not easy to always help around the house when you can't remember what the hypotenuse is 😅 That's okay! A tutor can help your child better understand, structure their ideas, and regain confidence.
Even for a young person who is "passing their classes", tutoring can be a good support to help them organize themselves, manage their stress, or simply stay on track throughout the year.
🎯 In summary:
It's never too late to ask for help (even after the first report card!).
A tutor is more than a remote teacher: they are a guide, an ally, a motivator.
Parents, athletes, coaches : you all have a role to play in academic success.
And remember: succeeding in school is just as important as succeeding in competition.
