Why are crop tops no longer allowed in Canada?
In this episode of the Kick's Cheer Podcast, the team tackles a hot topic that often comes up in conversations between parents, athletes, and coaches: the politics of image in cheerleading. Why are crop tops banned in Canada? Is there a real difference between the rules in Quebec, Canada, and the United States? We'll explain it all!
🚫 No more crop tops: a thoughtful decision
Since 2021, crop tops (tops that reveal the midriff) are no longer permitted in international cheerleading competitions. This decision comes from the International Cheerleading Federation, and it has also been adopted in Canada—including Quebec.
Why? To protect the athletes' image, their physical and mental well-being, and to give a better perception of sport to the general public. We want young people to feel good and confident in their uniform, not stressed about showing their stomachs on stage.
💡 Quebec vs Canada vs USA: different rules
Quebec : a stricter image policy that prohibits crop tops, overly transparent fabrics (skin-colored highlights), and encourages more natural makeup.
Canada : follows the broad outlines of international policy, but allows certain details that Quebec does not.
USA : still a lot of crop tops, heavy makeup, big curls. The T-shirt policy (covering the crop top outside of competition) is still in effect.
🧘♀️ Comfort above all
Coaches and gym owners are increasingly realizing that an athlete who is comfortable in their uniform is a better performer. Wearing a proper top, a supportive sports bra, and well-fitting shorts or leggings helps prevent accidents and keep you focused on your routine.
🎭 Looks are good, but performance is better!
Yes, uniforms are part of the show, but there are no points awarded for style in competition. You can lose points if your uniform doesn't follow the rules, but never win points just because it looks good. What matters is what you do on the mat!
👥 A policy for everyone
Whether it's a matter of comfort, religion, or gender identity, gyms and federations are becoming more open to adapting uniforms. A girl who prefers a "boy" uniform or an athlete who must wear long sleeves for religious reasons can now be discussed and accepted in many gyms.
📣 Conclusion
Image policy isn't there to stifle creativity or aesthetics, but to move cheerleading in the right direction. We want all athletes, regardless of their age, body type, or style, to feel good and proud to perform .
And above all, remember: it's not the uniform that makes the athlete, it's what you do on the mat!
