In this episode of the Kick's Cheer Podcast, we take you behind the scenes to discover what goes on behind the scenes at Kick's competitions. Vickie Desjardins, also mistakenly called "the crab" for years, opens the doors to her world!
🎭 Vickie: the benevolent shadow behind the scenes of cheerleading
If you've ever been to a Kick's competition, you've probably seen her... without really knowing who she is. Vickie is the one who handles everything you don't see: athlete entry, emergencies, delays, medals, results, and even... lost and found!
Her role? To keep the competition running smoothly without the stress of unforeseen events being apparent to the public. Yes, she's the one who runs to get a trash can if an athlete isn't feeling well just before performing—an anecdote I experienced in a crab costume 🦀!
🏆 Graduation emotions
One of Vickie's most memorable moments? Graduation awards. Seeing the tears, the hugs, and the final performances of athletes experiencing their last moment on the mat is intense. Anecdote: at CheerCup 2024, some thought it was their last competition... And hey presto, they win a spot at Graduation! 😭💙
🚗 Parking chaos… and lost keys
Behind the scene also means dealing with badly parked cars, forgotten car keys, or even announcements in the middle of a competition: "Can the owner of a gray Hyundai come and move their car, please?" 😅 Fortunately, a free shuttle is always available at Célébration... Spread the word!
In conclusion
Working behind the scenes is more than just holding a microphone or lining up medals. It's about paying attention to every detail, reacting quickly, comforting, supporting, and sometimes... being silently vomited on . 😅
So the next time you see Vickie (and not Mégane!), don't hesitate to say thank you for everything she does—often without anyone noticing.
