In the world of cheerleading, every athlete counts. Whether you're a top, base, back, or even a reserve, your role is essential. Episode 8 of the Kick's Cheer Podcast explains it well: absences aren't just an empty spot at practice; they have a significant impact on team performance... and on group dynamics.
💥 You choose to be absent? Own it.
Coaches often say it: we understand that there are unforeseen events, illnesses, family emergencies... But going to see Justin Bieber instead of training? That's a choice. And if you make that choice, you also have to accept the consequences: losing your place in the routine, being replaced, or having to wait your turn to come back.
Commitment to a team starts with respecting the schedule and your teammates.
⏰ Lateness and absences: same fight
It's not just complete absences that affect the team: lateness also weighs heavily. A shortened or half-started practice is one less opportunity for the team to work on its transitions, lifts, pyramids... and for you to progress.
📅 The importance of family planning
Cheerleading isn't something you do "in your spare time." From the start of the season, the coaches give you the full schedule: competitions, practices, holidays... Everything is known in advance.
So, if you plan vacations outside of the permitted periods (holidays, summer, spring break), you have to expect repercussions. This isn't punitive; it's just a matter of consistency for the entire team. An unplanned week off can cost you your place in the routine.
🤝 Parents' role: more important than you think
Parents are often the driving force behind athletes' punctuality and consistency. A notable anecdote shared in the episode? During a meeting, the staff clearly stated, "If your child arrives two minutes late with a Tim Hortons coffee in hand, we don't blame her; we blame you."
The responsibility is shared. And when parents are involved, present, and respect the rules, athletes are more committed too.
🧠 It's more than a sport: it's a team effort.
Unlike other individual sports, cheerleading relies on team synergy. One person is absent, and an entire pyramid falls apart. The coach has to modify the routine and make last-minute adjustments. It's not ideal.
And even if the coaches are super creative and find solutions, every absence puts enormous pressure on the rest of the team. Every training session is precious.
💡 In short: be there.
What the podcast kindly but firmly reminds us:
An absence is never without consequences.
Being present is proof of commitment to the team.
Parents play a key role in athlete consistency.
Respecting the rules, the schedule, and the coaches' decisions is essential.
So whether you're an athlete or a parent, be present. Not just physically, but also mentally, in your attitude and in your commitment.
