The end of the season is approaching, and with it... the long-awaited (and sometimes dreaded) moment: the try-outs! Whether you're an athlete or a parent, this time is filled with emotion, anticipation, and important decisions. In episode 21 of the Kick's Cheer Podcast, our hosts discuss, with candor and humor, everything you need to know to navigate this key milestone.
💡 Try-Outs are not a failure, but a step.
One of the important points made: being placed on a pre-competitive or novice team is not a failure. It's often a necessary step in building a solid foundation. Some athletes have started in prep or novice and ended up at the Summit or even Worlds! Trust the process. Every journey is unique.
🧠 Understanding coaches' decisions
Gym owners and coaches make their decisions for the well-being and development of each athlete. It's not simply a matter of "who's doing a back flip." They evaluate the totality of skills : tumbling, stunts, attitude, maturity, listening skills, and growth potential.
💬 “Trust the rankings. Quebec gyms are known for placing their athletes at the right level so they can perform and thrive.”
🤝 Parents: Be partners in the process
Parents have a huge role to play! Encourage your children, support the club's decisions, and ask the coaches directly if you have any questions. Many gyms even hold mandatory meetings after tryouts to explain how the club operates, commitments, schedules, and more.
🚀 The right team = more fun and progress
Being in a team that's suited to your level is the key to progressing and having fun all year round. It's better to shine at level 2 than to barely survive at level 3. The goal: to learn, surpass yourself and have a positive season, not just "perform at the highest level possible".
🙌 Some important reminders
Try-outs results do not determine your worth.
Every athlete has a different path.
Cheer is a team sport: the strength of the group is more important than the individual .
Communicate, ask questions, get involved!
🎉 In conclusion
Try-outs are a crucial moment in the life of a gym. It's a time for reflection, direction, and confidence. Take it as an opportunity to grow and learn, regardless of the outcome. And above all, remember: cheer is about surpassing yourself, discipline, and fun!
