In the world of cheerleading, there is a recurring confusion: what is the difference between ICU and Worlds?
If you're still mixing the two up... you're far from alone. Both events take place in the same week, in the same place, but have absolutely nothing to do with each other.
ICU vs Worlds: Countries vs Clubs
The most important difference is simple:
ICU (International Cheer Union) → you represent your country
IASF Worlds → you represent your club
👉 ICU = Team Canada, Team USA, etc. 👉 Worlds = All-Star gyms/teams
Think of the ICU as the Olympics of cheerleading, and the Worlds as the biggest club championship in the world.
🧠 Two championships… same week
That's where things get confusing for everyone.
Both competitions are taking place in Orlando:
ICU first
Next up are the Worlds (IASF)
So to an outsider, it all becomes “the Worlds”. But in reality, they are two separate events, two organizations, two systems.
🧩 Completely different systems
🏁 Qualification
ICU:
Selection via National Federation
Example: Cheer Canada selects Team Canada
Camps, trials, selection of the best athletes
Worlds (IASF):
Qualification via bids
Donated by event producers (like Kick's)
👉 So no, you can't "win a bid" for ICU.
🎭 Routines
This is probably the most underestimated difference.
ICU:
Cheer chant included
Cleaner, more structured, executed style
Less "spectacle", more technical
Worlds:
All-Star Style
Faster, more explosive, more showy
👉 Result: an athlete must completely adapt their performance style according to the competition.
📊 The scoring
ICU:
Judges evaluate the entire routine
Deductions integrated into the execution
Worlds:
Scoring by categories
Classic comparative system (stunts, tumbling, etc.)
👉 Even an instinctive reaction (like saving a stunt) can be judged differently depending on the system.
🇨🇦 Team Canada: another game
Being part of Team Canada is a completely different reality:
Training camps across the country
Individually selected athletes
Frequent travel
Significant financial commitment
And above all…
👉 You represent your country. 👉 Not your club.
It's a huge honor… but also a different kind of pressure.
