How the Cheerleading Federation was created: An inspiring Story

.Cheerleading, a dynamic and energetic sport, has greatly evolved in Quebec over the years. One of the key figures in this transformation is Valérie Prévost, a pioneer whose impact has shaped cheerleading as we know it today. In the third episode of season 1 of the Kick's Cheer Podcast, Valérie shares her incredible journey in creating the Quebec Cheerleading Federation. Here's a glimpse of her inspiring path.

The Beginnings of Cheerleading in Quebec

In the 80s, cheerleading was still emerging in Quebec. Competitions were limited, and the rules were often unclear. At that time, Valérie Prévost decided to embark on this adventure, despite the challenges and obstacles.

Valérie recalls the early days with much nostalgia. "When I started, cheerleading was still a fairly new sport here. There was no federation, no real organization. We were far from the standards we saw in the United States," she explains. Back then, competitions were simple and not very exciting.

The Shift with the Creation of the ACQ

In 2003, Valérie and her team decided it was time to innovate in Quebec's cheerleading scene. They began by forming a working group to create an association that could organize and regulate the sport. "We saw what was happening elsewhere, especially in the United States, and we wanted to bring those innovations here," she shares.

The creation of the Quebec Cheerleading Association (ACQ) was a major turning point. It helped structure the sport, establish competition levels, and set up rules. Valérie remembers, "Before, there were no clear rules or divisions. With the ACQ, we were able to introduce competition levels and rules that helped the sport grow."

Challenges and Innovations

Creating a federation was no easy task. Valérie and her team faced numerous challenges, including skepticism from some members of the cheerleading community and a lack of financial support in the beginning. However, their determination and passion paid off.

One of the major innovations brought by the ACQ was the introduction of categories and levels, aligned with those in the United States. This allowed Quebec teams to compete against other international teams and participate in world competitions. Valérie explains, "We worked hard to ensure that Quebec cheerleading was recognized globally. We started with small steps, but each change brought us closer to our goal."

The Impact of the Federation

The creation of the ACQ had a significant impact on cheerleading in Quebec. The number of athletes and clubs exploded, and the sport became much more structured. "When we launched the federation, we had about 3,000 members. Today, we've reached nearly 12,000 federated athletes. It's amazing to see how the sport has grown," Valérie rejoices.

For her, the greatest achievement is seeing young athletes thrive and fulfill themselves through cheerleading. "Every time I see an event or competition, I’m filled with pride. Cheerleading has become a recognized and appreciated sport, and I’m happy to have contributed to this evolution."

Valérie Prévost is a true pioneer of cheerleading in Quebec. Thanks to her dedication and vision, she managed to transform the sport and make it accessible to a larger number of athletes. Her story is an inspiration to all cheerleading enthusiasts, showing that determination and hard work can lead to extraordinary achievements.
