💸 Cheerleading and Money: Let’s Talk About It! (S1.18)

Updated: Jul 14

Episode of May 14, 2024

In episode 18 of the Kick's Cheer Podcast , we put our cards on the table: we talk about money. Yes, it's a sensitive topic, but it's essential for all parents and athletes who are (or want to be) in cheerleading.

So, how much does it cost, and can we make this sport more accessible without breaking the bank? Spoiler alert: yes, it's possible ! Here's what we took away from this discussion full of good advice, anecdotes, and truths.

🎯 Cheer for all budgets: we're talking money!

First, let's be clear: there's cheerleading for every budget. You don't need to be on a world-class team to pursue your passion. There are more local options, recreational teams, and clubs that offer a variety of price ranges.

But yes, the higher you want to go, the more you want to compete nationally or internationally, the more expensive it will be. This is true in all sports, not just cheer.

💭 Put things into perspective

Everything in life is relative. Sure, if you say, "It costs $7,000 for the year ," it might seem a bit steep at first. But generally, that amount includes everything: travel, hotels, plane tickets, tuition. And we're talking about an international level here.

When you compare it to other sports at an equivalent level (international), you realize that many disciplines cost much more. This isn't even counting training camps or practices abroad.

So, even though it is a significant amount, it is important to put things into perspective .

👛 Is it worth it?

One of the questions asked in the podcast was super insightful: "As a parent, did I get a good return on my investment?"

And the answer was touching: if your child tells you they love cheerleading, mission accomplished. We're not just talking about money here; we're talking about values, fun, growth, and proud moments as a parent.

🏷️ Tips for saving money

Yes, cheer can be expensive, but there are plenty of ways to cut costs :

  • Shop smart : Uniforms, buckles, shoes... there are used versions, online discounts, or resale groups. No need to buy everything new.

  • Beware of competing stores! We know, it's tempting. But if you want to avoid spending $300 on hoodies or accessories, leave your card at home. Seriously. Just your license and your child's health insurance card, and you'll limit the damage.

  • Plan your fundraising : Don't start in December. Plan in September. There are tons of simple ideas online, and clubs often have programs to help.

  • Get creative with gifts : At Christmas or a birthday, ask for cheer gear or money for the season. Every little bit can make a difference.

🧠 Stay informed

Many parents find it expensive... but without really knowing what costs what . Take the time to find out. Ask questions at your club, compare options. Maybe you'll realize that it's not the sport that's expensive, but the extras we add without realizing it.

💬 Any last words?

Cheerleading is possible, no matter your budget. You just have to be organized, curious, and sometimes a little strategic. And above all, remember why you're doing it. If your children are happy, if they grow up in sports, if they learn discipline and self-confidence, that's already a victory. 💪

And if you really want to make a difference (without spending a dime), like, comment, and share this podcast. It helps the community tremendously, and it costs nothing!
